Molecules

Molecules: what are they? We talk about molecules a lot on chemistry, but what are they. Well, we talk a little about them in Bonding, but let's talk about what a molecule is. A molecule is a combination on atoms. For example, a water molecule is comprised of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atoms. Its formula is H2O. This is not the only way that oxygen and hydrogen can combine. Hydrogen peroxide, what many people use to bleach hair or disinfect wounds, contains two hydrogen atoms and TWO oxygen atoms. Its formula is H2O2. Similarly, taking away one hydrogen from water gives a hydroxide ion, OH-. All three of these combinations of oxygen and hydrogen are molecules. We consider any combination of different elements molecules.
